About 60,000 People Living With HIV Receive Free Medical Treatment from Public Hospitals

Phnom Penh: About 60,000 people living with HIV receive free antiretroviral treatment from public hospitals, which has helped lower the annual death rate from HIV.

On December 16, 2022, Eang Moly, President of the National AIDS Authority, and US Ambassador Patrick Murphy commemorate World AIDS Day 2022 and the Red Ribbon Festival under the theme "Equalize," organized by FHI 360.

According to the report of the National Center For HIV/AIDS, dermatology and STD (NCHADS), in the third quarter of 2022, 64,184 people living with HIV (approximately 99%) received free antiretroviral treatment from public hospitals, resulting in an annual decline in the HIV death rate.

According to the report, Cambodia has reduced the number of new HIV infections from 2,300 in 2010 to an estimated 1,100 by 2021, and the number of HIV infections due to drug injection is also declining every year.

At the same time, Mr Eang Moly called on people to be careful and protect themselves from HIV and continue to participate in preventing the spread of HIV through all methods, including self-testing, condom use, HIV prevention drugs (prep), and post-exposure. We must regard those who have HIV as victims, abolish all types of prejudice and disrespect, and provide all possible support.
